One of the very greatest scientists and humanitarians who ever lived. In the 1960s, predictions of famine and starvation were all the rage in futurist and environmental circles, as typified in Paul Ehrlich's The Population Bomb. The iconic science-fiction film Soylent Green was based on this theme. It was made in 1973 and set in 2022. It is largely because of Dr. Borlaug's work that these predictions haven't come true. He gave the world an extra 50 years, what we have done with it is on our heads.

There were some places where Borlaug had to give-up on because of problems that were simply out of his hands. Namely, politics.

Short version: Norman insisted that governments change their policies to recognize at least some basic respect for farmers' property rights and provide them with essentials such as water. But some states (read: tin-pot dictators and tribal warlords) flat-out refused.

Thanks to Borlaug, science has basically solved the problem of world hunger. Its mainly political issues that are getting in the way and keeping people hungry.

And if the AGW deniers have their way, all of Borlaug's work will be undone.
